Birmingham Bouncing to Gymnastics Glory
The people of Birmingham are feeling rightly proud of the fact their city is to host the prestigious 2023 World Trampoline, Tumbling & DMT Gymnastics Championships. What’s more, it will follow on from what is certain to be a successful 2022 Commonwealth Games in the West Midlands. It also enhances both the UK and the second city as a base for world class sporting events. And with three spectacular gymnastics disciplines in action across 10 fabulous days, huge crowds will witness a great selection of top-quality gymnastics skills.
A Great City
“We are thrilled to have secured another world class event in Birmingham, a city that we have a fantastic history with”, said British Gymnastics Chief Executive Officer, Jane Allen. “It is a great opportunity to promote and showcase gymnastics, and in particular, the disciplines of trampoline and tumbling in the UK to inspire the next generation of gymnasts.”
And what better venue could these athletes have than the superb National Indoor Arena and all it’s fantastic facilities. You may recall back in 2011 at the Trampoline Gymnastics World Championships, Britain’s women’s trampoline team secured world silver, in what had been an amazing competition.
A Decade of Hard Work
The decision taken by the Federation of International Gymnastics or FIG, is the result of a combined bid involving British Gymnastics, Birmingham City Council and UK Sport. It shows total belief in British gymnastics, and in truth, was the climax of a decade of hard work by the governing body and UK Sport. Presenting major international events is what it’s all about, just like securing the 2022 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships for Liverpool.
It should come as no surprise given Birmingham’s role in the vibrant history of gymnastics. Many of the sports’ stars have achieved incredible things in both this city and on the world stage. And of course, the area already has lots of valuable experience when it comes to putting on multiple European and global events.
But there’s more to the story, as the championships will also include the World Age Group competitions featuring the best up-and-coming trampoline, tumbling and double-mini trampoline gymnasts on the planet. Can there be a better backdrop to encourage and inspire the next generation of gymnastic athletes?
Given Birmingham’s record for drawing large crowds and promoting some of the world’s finest sport, it would seem to make complete sense. From the 9th to the 19th of November, late 2023 will see more than 1,500 competitors and officials descending on Birmingham, not forgetting a sizeable media audience.
What we should also remember is by this time, the Olympic cycle will be turning very closely toward Paris 2024. A new batch of potential stars could very well make a name for themselves here in the UK before going on to win Olympic Gold.
A Happy Council
Councillor Ian Ward, Leader of Birmingham City Council said: “We are delighted to have secured the 2023 World Championships for Birmingham, thanks to the work done with our partners at British Gymnastics, Arena Birmingham and UK Sport.
“Following hot on the heels of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, this event will undoubtedly provide a significant economic benefit to the city and help maintain our international profile.”
National Lottery Funding
Boosting National Lottery Funding in this part of the world without doubt means the area can continue to host exciting world class events everyone can enjoy and have access to.
Simon Morton, Chief Operating Officer at UK Sport, said: “We’re delighted that the UK has been selected to host the 2023 World Trampoline Championships, and that National Lottery funding will be supporting the continued staging of major international sporting events in Birmingham, in the year after it hosts the 2022 Commonwealth Games.”
The Thrill of The Sport
Trampoline athletes can hit heights of up to 20 feet in some cases – when this is interlinked with incredible twists, turns and somersaults, it can often be electrifying to watch. Making hairs stand up on the back of the neck is easy just following a gymnast thundering down the runway before springing into action. Witnessing the many aerial tricks they perform is equally as captivating.
It’s vitally important to continue attracting more spectators to a sport that’s at its healthiest ever point in the UK. It also serves to stir the imagination of clubs up and down the land.
There’s little doubt – Birmingham is the perfect showcase.
